During my first year of film school, I had the exciting opportunity to create micro-documentaries highlighting the capstone projects from the School of Advanced Digital Technology. These videos were to be presented to an audience that included some of the most prominent figures in the Canadian software industry. While the idea of showcasing my work to such an important crowd was initially intimidating, I saw it as a valuable opportunity for potential clients to recognize both my name and my capabilities. With that in mind, a few friends and I decided to commit to the project.
This experience taught me a great deal about the editing process, particularly in the realm of documentary storytelling, which differs significantly from narrative films. I learned how to edit dialogue for clarity and flow, and how to effectively pair A-roll interviews with engaging, B-roll to support the story visually. One of the most important lessons, however, was learning how to receive and implement client feedback with professionalism.
